Here is the original artwork for the classic “Popeye” Sunday Comic Strip, dated August 3rd, 1980, written and pencilled by Bud Sagendorf.
Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Brutus star in this great-looking Sunday by Sagendorf, protégé to creator E.C. Segar, who did the most to perpetuate Popeye as a self-renewing character. Produced in ink over blue pencil on Bristol board with an image area measuring approximately 21" x 14.25" inches. The artwork is in very good condition, with no corrections or word balloon paste-ups. Title is stat paste-up. The artwork is issued with our detailed information card (as pictured).
BUD SAGENDORF (1915-1994)
Forrest "Bud" Sagendorf was a teenager when he began as an apprentice for "Popeye" creator, cartoonist E.C. Segar in 1932. Following Segar's death, Sagendorf began illustrating various materials including comic books and a variety of toys and games because at age 23 King Features, who own the copyright to the cartoon, believed he was too young to take over the comic strip. In 1958, King Features finally hired Sagendorf to do the daily and Sunday comic strips from 1959 thru 1986. He wrote and illustrated "Popeye: The First Fifty Years" in 1979. He continued drawing Sunday strips until his death in 1994.
