Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's landmark Supermarionation television series.
Thunderbirds began its hourly 32 episode run in 1965. A secret organisation called International Rescue, based on an island in the Pacific, is led by astronaut Jeff Tracy and his five sons. They seek out trouble and are able to engage in rescue operations with the help of five Thunderbird vehicles which can travel on land, sea and space.
Jeff and his sons, Scott, Virgil, Alan, Gordon and John are aided by a scientific genius, Brains, and a glamorous London-based agent, Lady Penelope. and her chauffeur, a cockney ex-criminal called Parker.
Thunderbirds was noted for its originality and its stunning visual effects. Rather like the Beatles of the same Swinging Sixties era it represents a landmark in the lives of many people who were growing up in that era. Its cultural impact has endured over the years and has been taken up by younger generations.
Thunderbirds captured the hearts of millions worldwide, was a huge commercial success and became one of the all-time most popular TV series.
