Virtually everybody knows that behind Batman's cowl is millionaire Bruce Wayne. And behind Spiderman's mask is young photographer Peter Parker. Older folks might even know that pulp hero, The Green Hornet, as the crime-fighting identity of news man Britt Reid. But for a brief period in the late-1960's, the masks of all of those Super Heroes were worn by a single man - Captain Action! Ideal's Captain Action launched in 1966 and was in direct response to Hasbro's highly popular G.I. Joe. But while Hasbro took the safer route and limited G.I. Joe to the four branches of the military, Ideal took the concept of interchangeable outfits one step further. They sought to capitalize on the popularity of comic books and the then-hit Adam West Batman television show. Here was a doll-cum-action figure who could be transformed into any one of the thirteen most popular heroes of the day. As these characters - Batman , Superman, Flash Gordon, Phantom , Steve Canyon , Spider-Man, Aquaman, Captain America , Buck Rogers, Lone Ranger, Tonto, The Green Hornet (the most rare and most highly desired costume - recently one sold for more than $6,000.00), and Sgt. Fury. Captain Action was given an alien from outer space as an adversary, Dr. Evil, and a sidekick, Action Boy, who could change into other characters. Ideal also tried a line of female Superheroes to coincide with the Captain Action characters called Super Queens Comic Heroines which was a failure then, but is now highly sought after. They included the DC Comics characters of Batgirl, Supergirl, Wonder Woman , and Mera (the Queen of Atlantis/ Aquaman's wife). Contents & Condition: 12" black haired figure, with complete costume and the following ccessories which include silver ray gun. and in great condition. The costume does not have any snags and the two original snaps are intact and unharmed. The emblem is original, intact, fresh, and beautiful which is uncommon. |
